When we reach 40 we are very likely to have the same length of life to live over. Just imagine, a second chance to make the next 40 years of your life exceptional. Reinventing your life at any age is always an option but when we hit middle age something seems to shift.
There’s a real desire to evaluate where we are, how far we have come, how well we have done, what’s working and what’s not.
The flip side of all this navel gazing is that we all tend to focus more on what we haven’t achieved than what we have. As women, we seem hard-wired to be incredibly hard on ourselves and mentally give more prominence to our failures than to our successes.
Another particularly female trait is to put everyone else’s needs before our own. Sometimes this is unavoidable, but sometimes we use it as an excuse to not attempt or achieve something because deep down, we fear we may not succeed or worse still, we may succeed and feel unworthy of that success.
Ask yourself this question…….
If there was one thing you could achieve in your life and you knew you could not fail – what would that be?
Do you have a passion for something you want to turn into a business and leave your 9 to 5 job behind?
Have you always wanted to write a book and see the fruits of your talent on bookshelves up and down the country as well as being a best-selling author on Amazon?
Do you dream of finding the ‘real’ love of your life – your soul mate, someone who can walk side by side with you as your equal for the rest of your days?
Or maybe you want to travel – to see the wonders of the world in a renovated VW camper! The point is you do have a dream, an ambition, a real longing to achieve something that has been pushed down and pushed away for too long because you are afraid to try or feel unworthy in some way.
Reinventing your life over 40 means having the courage to change things up, to step outside your comfort zone so you can finally live authentically and honestly. Honouring and believing in your own possibility is not easy, but it’s well worth it.
Everyone knows the feeling of exhilaration when we are lucky enough to find our lives in balance – everything just seems to be working out exactly as it should and that feeling is nothing short of euphoric!
The difficulty is, most of us don’t get that feeling often enough and some may feel they have never, ever had it.
There are certain key areas of our lives that are all equally important and finding balance across each of these areas can dramatically change the trajectory of our life journey. The problem is, not many people take the time to understand what these areas are or have the courage to honestly analyse their current life against each of them.
There is an old saying – “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there”. When reinventing your life after 40 you have to know where you want to go otherwise, you are pretty much leaving the direction of your life up to eternal circumstances many of which you may have no control over.
To reinvent your life after 40, 50, 60 or 70 takes courage but when you look back at aged 80 you will be very, very glad you did.
There is a tool that many life coaches, including myself use to help clients understand where they are in life in relation to the 8 key areas. The wheel of life can help you assess areas of your life that are working well and areas that you are less happy with. You then have a clear picture of where improvements might be made and what these might be. By turning this information into a mini action plan, you have the basis of a way ahead.
Using a personal journal to log this information is a great way to keep on track, celebrate small wins, keep momentum and slowly start to see big changes.
